SA and the United Nations

South Africa was one of the 51 countries that founded the United Nations in 1945, soon after the 2nd World War 1939 to 1945.

When the National Party (Apartheid Regime) took over in 1948, relations between SA and the UN became increasingly strained because of SA’s racist policies.

In 1962, the UN passed a resolution condemning these racist policies and called for an Arms Embargo against SA.

In 1971 the UN denounced the Bantustan Homeland system of SA.

South Africa got expelled in 1974 from taking its seat at the UN General Assembly. Before expulsion, other member countries physically prevented SA from taking its seat.

Countries that continued to veto SA's expulsion from the UN at the time included the USA, UK, and France. These countries are still permanent members of the UN Security Council.

SA was finally readmitted as a full member of the UN in 1994 after the advent of democracy.
